Project Development

The Challenge

LOTTA LUDWIGSON, a Berlin-based label known for feminist tailoring and responsible fashion, teamed up with MELINA BUCHER to create a capsule collection made entirely from MIRUM®, a natural, plastic-free alternative to leather. The goal was to develop a range of tailored clothing pieces that align with both brands’ values — combining bold, timeless design with uncompromising material sustainability. Creating a premium clothing collection out of an innovative biobased material like MIRUM® required an unusual fusion of skills: from classic tailoring to leathercraft. The challenge was to adapt MIRUM® to these silhouettes without compromising wearability, aesthetics, or the collection’s commitment to biobased, sustainable materials.

Our Solution

We worked in close collaboration with both brands to bring the RUNA Collection to life — a line of statement tailoring pieces made with plastic-free, biobased materials. Our studio handled the full product development process: from early sketches and material testing to prototyping and final production. This project brought together our bag makers and tailors in a true cross-disciplinary collaboration. To understand how MIRUM® could behave in garment construction, we ran a series of small-scale manipulation tests — experimenting with folding, skiving, edge treatment, and fastening techniques. We sourced suitable biobased reinforcements and lining materials to complement the outer material and ensure comfort and structure. Each garment was prototyped and refined in our studio, adjusting construction details to make the pieces elegant yet wearable.

The final RUNA Collection features a sculptural vest, a structured skirt, and a statement dress — all handcrafted made-to-order in Germany from next-gen materials.
